Permanent Install Workspace Heaters – Hardwired vs. Corded: Which is Right for You? How to Avoid These Common Mistakes.

Installed workspace heaters are a smart way to bring reliable warmth to your garage, shop, or utility space – but choosing the right type is critical.  Should you go with a hardwired model or a corded 240V model?  Each has its advantages depending on your space and power availability.

However, we see two common issues that often lead to confusion, poor performance, or unrealistic expectations:

  1. Not understanding the electrical requirements for hardwired models
  1. Using a 240V corded heater with a standard 120V outlet via an adaptor

We will walk you through the pros and cons of each heater type – plus help you avoid these common mistakes.

Hardwired Mounted Heaters

EWH9800 5000W Hard-Wire Electric Heater

Best for: Permanent installations in garages, workshops, or large utility rooms with access to dedicated power.  Hardwire models range from 5,000W / 17,060 BTUs models which heat up to a 600 sq. ft. area, and 10,000W / 34,120 BTUs models which heat up to a 1,200 sq. ft. area. Select models also include remote controls for added convenience.

Pros:

  • Seamless look – no exposed cords
  • Delivers high wattage for strong, consistent heat
  • Installs on ceiling or high on wall keeping your floor space open.  This provides better safety on the ground and for the heater itself.

 Cons:

  • Requires professional installation
  • Needs a 240V dedicated line
  • Not portable

Common Mistake: These are not plug-in heaters. You must have them wired directly into your power system by a licensed electrician.  Attempting a DIY installation without the right knowledge or tools could damage the unit – or create a safety hazard.  Always consult a professional before installation.

240V Corded Installed Heaters

Best for: Smaller, non-living spaces with a 240V outlet already available, like a garage or workshop.  Mountable corded models range from 3,750W / 12,800 BTUs, which heat up to a 400 sq. ft. area, to 4,800W / 16,400 BTUs models which heat up to a 525 sq. ft. area. Some models also include remote controls for added convenience and comfort.

Pros:

  • No installation required
  • Powerful heating performance for the recommended heating area.
  • Can be unplugged and relocated if needed

Cons:

  • Requires a 240V outlet (not standard household outlets)
  • Special outlet requirements may limit placement options
  • Still needs correct breaker and outlet set up

Common Mistake: Some people try to use a 240V heater with a 120V outlet using an adapter.  While the heater may power on, it won’t reach its full heat output.  This leads to poor performance and the mistaken belief that the heater is broken – it’s not, it’s just not getting the voltage it needs to run properly.  Ensure you have access to a 240V outlet prior to purchase and installation.

So, Which Should You Choose?

  • Want a clean, permanent installation and don’t plan to move the unit? A Hardwired Model is your best bet.
  • Do you have a large space to heat? A Hardwired Model will perform best.
  • Have access to a 240V outlet and want installation flexibility? A Corded Model makes sense.
  • Don’t have access to 240V?  Check out our line of 120V rated workspace heaters instead – never force compatibility with an adapter.
